Introducing the Green Legacy Initiative: How Green Comfort Systems Gives Back to Maryland's Forests

At Green Comfort Systems, "green" has always meant more than energy-efficient HVAC equipment. It's why we launched the Green Legacy Initiative — our ongoing commitment to giving back to the Maryland communities and natural spaces we call home.

What is the Green Legacy Initiative?

The Green Legacy Initiative is Green Comfort Systems' giving-back program, through which a portion of the revenue generated by our customer service — every installation, repair, and maintenance visit — is designated to support environmental conservation programs across Maryland. Rather than spreading that support thin, we've partnered directly with the Maryland Forestry Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the sustainable management of Maryland's forests, so our contributions go toward real, measurable work happening right here in our state.

Why we created it

As a small, locally owned HVAC company based in Rosedale, Maryland, we've always felt a responsibility to the community that supports us. Heating and cooling systems have a real environmental footprint, and we believe a company built around energy efficiency and sustainability should back that philosophy with action — not just better equipment, but a genuine investment in the health of Maryland's environment and the people who live here. The Green Legacy Initiative is how we put that belief into practice.

The Maryland Forestry Foundation's mission

The Maryland Forestry Foundation's mission is to advocate for the responsible management, conservation, and sustainable utilization of Maryland's diverse forest resources; to educate the general public, private forest landowners, and state and local leaders about the many benefits forests provide; to protect and expand forest cover across Maryland; and to support the state's 24 local Forestry Boards in their work to promote and strengthen sustainable forestry management practices.

How it gives back to the community

In September 2026, Green Comfort Systems made a donation of $2,050 to the Maryland Forestry Foundation as part of the Green Legacy Initiative, with an ongoing commitment to continued support. Those funds are currently designated to three of the Foundation's programs:

• Healthy Forests Healthy Waters — a tree-planting program on privately owned land across Maryland, run in collaboration with the Maryland Forest Service and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, and made possible by grants from the Chesapeake & Atlantic Coastal Bay Trust Fund. Since 2013 it has planted over 750,000 trees on 2,130 acres across 22 counties and 580 private landowner project sites — work aimed at cutting nutrient and sediment runoff into the Chesapeake Bay through afforestation and long-term forest management.

• Natural Resources Careers Camp — hosted annually for the past 40 years, this week-long, immersive summer camp introduces Maryland high schoolers to careers and college paths across the many fields of natural resources. Industry and government professionals lead hands-on learning throughout the week, and representatives from 6–7 colleges meet directly with students at "College Night" to walk them through natural resources curricula. An Allegany College of Maryland professor leads the academic portion of the camp, with ACM forestry students serving as counselors. Several high-profile state employees, including the current head of the Maryland Forest Service, attended the camp in their teens.

• The Mel Noland Fellowship — the Foundation has offered Fellowships to Maryland college students since 2012, and since 2019, when the program's funding was written into Maryland law, it has awarded four 10-month Fellowships annually to students pursuing careers in natural resources and urban forestry. Fellows also help promote the Foundation's high school camps and urban forestry programs, contribute input on policy proposals, and build networking connections with government, nonprofit, and industry professionals.

Foundation President Gary G. Allen said the donation "will support tree plantings throughout Maryland; annual week-long, hands-on camp experiences for high schoolers in natural resource fields; and four annual fellowships." Green Comfort Systems also received a Certificate of Recognition from the Foundation for its contributions.

What's involved

This isn't a one-time gesture — it's ongoing. As Green Comfort Systems keeps serving homeowners across the Baltimore metro, a share of that service revenue keeps flowing to the Foundation's conservation, education, and career-development work, in support of a mission that reaches every corner of the state.
