5 Signs Your AC Won't Survive Another Baltimore Summer

5 Signs Your AC Won't Survive Another Baltimore Summer

Patton

Baltimore summers don't ease into anything — one week it's pleasant, the next the heat index is triple digits and every air conditioner in the metro is running flat out. That's exactly when marginal systems fail. Here are the five warning signs we see most, and what each one means.

1. Rising energy bills without rising usage

If your summer electric bill keeps climbing but your habits haven't changed, your system is working harder to deliver the same cooling. Dirty coils, low refrigerant, or a compressor losing efficiency are the usual culprits — all of them get worse, not better.

2. Warm air or weak airflow

Air coming from the vents should be noticeably cold and strong. Warm or weak airflow points to low refrigerant, a failing compressor, or duct problems. Any of these will finish off an aging system during a heat wave.

3. Strange noises or smells

Grinding, screeching, or hissing means mechanical trouble or a refrigerant leak. Musty smells usually mean moisture where it shouldn't be — often a clogged condensate drain or mold in the air handler. All of it deserves a professional look before July.

4. Short cycling

An AC that starts, runs a few minutes, and shuts off — over and over — is either oversized, low on refrigerant, or overheating. Short cycling is brutal on compressors, and the compressor is the most expensive part of the system.

5. It's 12+ years old and needs a repair

The average central AC lasts 12–15 years. If yours is in that window and facing a significant repair, put the repair cost against a high-efficiency replacement — often a heat pump — that will cut your bills every month it runs.

The smart move: get ahead of it

A pre-season tune-up catches most of these problems while they're still cheap to fix. And if the system really is on its last leg, you'd rather plan a replacement in April than sweat through an emergency install in a 98° week.
