Indoor Air Quality 101: Cleaner Air, Healthier Home

Patton

The EPA reports that indoor air is often two to five times more polluted than outdoor air — and we spend about 90% of our time indoors. The good news: indoor air quality is one of the most fixable problems in your home, and the fixes stack.

Start with filtration

The single-inch filter that came with your system catches dust bunnies, not much else. Upgrading to a properly sized media filter or a whole-home filtration system captures the fine particles that actually affect health — pollen, pet dander, smoke, and dust — across every room, every time the system runs.

Seal the ducts

Leaky return ducts don't just waste energy — they vacuum air from the dirtiest parts of your house (attic, crawlspace, garage) and blow it into your living space. Sealing the duct system is one of the highest-impact air quality fixes available, and it lowers your bills at the same time.

Manage humidity

Dust mites and mold thrive above about 60% relative humidity; dry air below 30% irritates airways and sinuses. Maryland delivers both extremes in the same year. Whole-home humidity control keeps the air in the healthy middle band year-round.

Add purification where it counts

For households with allergies, asthma, or lingering odor issues, an air purification system — installed in the ductwork so it treats the whole house — addresses what filtration alone can't, including many viruses, VOCs, and odors.

Where to start

Don't guess. An air quality assessment identifies which of these layers your home actually needs — many homes only need one or two. Start there, fix the biggest contributor first, and breathe easier.
